Murilo Piva: “In Brazil the universe of algae is yet to be explored”

Olmix Group Territory Manager Murilo Piva was interviewed last weekend by Prof. Jose Luiz Tejon at Jovem Pan FM, one of the main radio stations in Brazil. During the interview, both talked about the company’s current affairs and the real revolution that algae has caused in the animal production sector.

P.T.- The revolutionary world of algae is going to arrive in Brazil in 2016. Farmers and producers are aware of that but, what is it exactly this business about? What are its key points?

M.P.- It is true that here in Brazil the universe of algae is yet to be exploited. However, it has a lot of potential because of the wide coastal area and the big variety of algae specie. The properties of algae are unique and you will not find anything similar on the Earth’s surface. In fact, algae has a very big market in some countries around the world such as Japan.

P.T.- How is this new actor going to affect the animal production sector? What about its impact on meat producers?

M.P.- Olmix is a French company that is present in more than 70 countries and holds 14 patents. One of them, Amadéite, is a hybrid material, a clay whose structure has been modified by algae extracts. These extracts of algae work as pillars and create a new space in the heart of the clay’s structure. This clay enables the adsorption of mycotoxins, which have a negative impact on the animals’ immune and digestive system. Therefore, that would mean enhancing productivity.

P.T.- It is clear that producers can take advantage of this innovative technology to improve the animal’s health and welfare. In any case, it is in deep contrast with the usage of antibiotics and medicines in the animal sector…

M.P.- It is, indeed. Once the animal strengthens its defenses and is less exposed to environmental aggressions, it is less likely to be affected by pathogens. In consequence, the use of antibiotics and medicines will not be that necessary.

P.T.- Actually, nowadays consumers are looking more and more for natural products in order to live a healthy lifestyle.

M.P.- Yes, you are absolutely right. European countries are trying to produce in a healthy and sustainable way. Here in South America we have high quality products and that is the reason we are an exporting country. However, we have to take into account that there are certain rules that we have to respect in terms of production. I do think that the agri-food industry has to adapt to the current market trends.
