Nearly thirty scientists of the highest level, Breton specialists in marine sciences and in algae, representatives of research labs, of CNRS Roscoff, of the University of Western Brittany, of the University of Southern Brittany, of the INRA and of the regional SMEs presented the richness and the potential of algae to provide solutions to the world issues of nutrition and health, particularly of animals and plants.

It is not a coincidence that OLMIX chose, right in the heart of Brittany, the town of Pontivy, also known as Napoléon Ville. In his time, Napoléon indeed placed France at the forefront of the dominant scientific powers, as a result of a voluntarist policy intended by the Emperor and implemented with talent by high-quality scientific elite.

The thirty or so researchers who contributed to this symposium are the heirs to this Breton scientific community of excellence, which is at the leading edge as regards the knowledge of the wealth of marine resources and of their future use.

With the help of this impressive line-up of experts, 400 specialists in animal nutrition and breeding coming from 24 countries, discovered the future uses of these algae, available in a variety of products intended for tomorrow’s breeding, aquaculture and agriculture.

A meeting of scientists, Breton SMEs and the new government team of Côte d’Ivoire

This symposium was organized under the high patronage of Mr. Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani, Minister of Animal and Halieutic Resources of  Côte d’Ivoire. It is at the invitation of Mr. Hervé Balusson, chairman and managing director of OLMIX, that the Minister of Côte d’Ivoire, accompanied by a delegation of scientists, came in parallel with SPACE to discover the expertise and the breeding techniques in Brittany, in order to develop effective industries in his country.

The delegation had the opportunity to meet the Breton SMEs specializing in breeding in order to explore the possibilities of cooperation and partnership, for the purpose of strengthening the production of animal proteins which are essential for the food of the population of Côte d’Ivoire, which knows a strong growth.

The ULVANS project was presented to the guests

These scientific meetings gave the international scientific lecturers the opportunity to discover the very ambitious program called ULVANS, whose aim is to create a channel for the processing and exploitation of algae in Brittany.

Indeed, Olmix and four other Breton SMEs have created a Group named ULVANS, whose ambition is to implement a new algae exploitation channel in Brittany, beginning with their harvesting, going to their processing into innovative products with applications in the sectors of animal nutrition, animal and plant health and soil fertility, up to the sale of these new products all over the world.

This ambitious regional project perfectly meets tomorrow’s challenges, at a time when innovation, ecology, employment and exportation are a central issue in France.

The initiative launched by OLMIX will also allow the revival of the local Breton economy by the creation of about 100 jobs and the reindustrialization of an unproductive industrial site in Plouénan. Furthermore, by the year 2020 this project should generate a turnover of about 150 million euros.
